SUPERVISORS HAIL BANKERS: A SHOCKING DISPLAY OF... STATUS QUO!Power & Politics
SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.349 · PANEL 3/6 · SB-46C

Well, butter our biscuits and call us surprised! The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, known for their tireless efforts to 'transform' our county into a utopia of, well, *them*, recently took a break from debating artisanal weed farm zoning to adopt a Resolution of Commendation. And who, pray tell, was the recipient of this rare public accolade? Why, the esteemed Dierberg Family of First Bank, honored as a 2026 Legacies of Hope honoree!

One might have expected a commendation for, say, a brave taxpayer who actually managed to navigate the county's Byzantine permit process without suffering an aneurysm, or perhaps a small business owner who survived yet another round of punitive regulations. But no, our Supervisors, ever keen to uplift the truly downtrodden, chose to celebrate a banking dynasty. This, from the same folks who routinely decry 'corporate greed' and 'the 1%.' The irony, as always, is lost on them, but it’s certainly not lost on us.

It makes you wonder, doesn't it? While they wring their hands over 'affordable housing' and 'climate emergencies,' they're simultaneously patting the backs of the very institutions that embody the 'capitalist system' they so often demonize. Perhaps the 'Legacies of Hope' title is a subtle nod to the hope that, one day, even our progressive Supervisors might fully embrace the very free markets that generate the wealth necessary to fund their ever-expanding government ambitions. Or maybe, just maybe, campaign contributions speak louder than protest chants. We here at The Whipping Post aren't saying, but we're certainly thinking it. It's a classic case of 'do as I say, not as I commend.'

This agenda item from the reliably perplexing SB County Board of Supervisors just goes to show: for all their talk about 'the people,' when it comes down to a ceremonial back-pat, they know exactly which side their organic, free-range bread is buttered on. And it’s usually by a very well-heeled hand holding a very large checkbook. Don't worry, taxpayers, they'll be back to lecturing you about saving water and sorting your compost next week. The revolutionary spirit can only stretch so far before a photo op with financial titans becomes unavoidable.
