The Santa Barbara Independent, in its latest breathless dispatch from City Hall, heralds the arrival of a 'buzzing sound' – apparently, Councilmember Santamaria – as if City Council meetings were previously held in a library after closing. One might wonder if this 'buzz' is the sound of innovative solutions or just the municipal shredder going into overdrive on the budget. Our colleagues at the Independent seem to think a councilmember 'showing up' is a groundbreaking act, rather than, you know, the baseline requirement of the job. Perhaps next, they'll report on a councilmember actually reading the agenda packet cover-to-cover.

This 'we are worth fighting for' rhetoric, as parroted by the Independent, usually translates into a fight for more pet projects, more committees, and more consultants, all generously underwritten by the city's long-suffering taxpayers. One wonders if being 'in the rooms that determine our future world' involves less deliberation and more hand-wringing over which shade of green the next 'sustainable' initiative's brochure should be. The real buzzing sound many residents hear is the ever-increasing whir of their own wallets being emptied to fund the latest progressive fantasy.

What the Independent fails to connect the dots on is how this 'buzz' might just be the political equivalent of a shiny new object, distracting from the genuine issues plaguing Santa Barbara. Instead of platitudes about 'our future world,' perhaps a focus on crumbling infrastructure, soaring homeless numbers, or the ever-present housing crisis might be in order. But alas, actual governance isn't as glamorous as being the 'buzzing sound' that echoes through the halls of taxpayer-funded power. Maybe we'll get some actual results after the buzz dies down, or more likely, after the next election cycle.
