Apparently, the sight of neighbors celebrating America's birth with a little backyard sparkle is a greater menace to society than, say, the city's ever-expanding bureaucracy.

Now, armed with this invaluable report from Fire Chief Brad Dandridge – who we're sure spent countless hours documenting the nefarious activities of sparkler enthusiasts – the council is pondering hiking the fines. Because nothing says 'community spirit' like threatening citizens with financial ruin for a harmless pop and sizzle. One might wonder if they commissioned a similar report on the cost of inefficient government spending or how many tax dollars evaporate into thin air on consultants' fees. Probably not, because those don't involve the thrilling prospect of punishing constituents.
