The Santa Barbara Independent, bless their bleeding hearts, bravely reported this week that after six years, countless 'stakeholder meetings' (read: progressive echo chambers), and a small fortune undoubtedly funneled into the coffers of politically connected 'consultants,' our fair city has finally stumbled upon a profound revelation regarding State Street: perhaps, just perhaps, vehicular traffic isn't the existential threat they'd imagined. Who could have foreseen such a groundbreaking discovery? It only cost the taxpayers millions to state the obvious.

Indeed, our civic 'leaders' are now delicately tiptoeing around the idea of allowing *some* cars back onto the famed thoroughfare. It’s almost as if common sense, which conservatives are often accused of hoarding, has finally managed to squeeze a tiny peep into the hallowed halls of city planning. One must commend the incredible bureaucratic stamina required to spend half a decade and mountains of cash to arrive at a conclusion that any resident over the age of six could have offered for a popsicle.

This grand experiment in urban planning, which essentially turned a vibrant commercial street into a glorified, depopulated pedestrian mall for the occasional unhoused encampment, was always destined to fail. But don't you worry your pretty little heads about accountability, dear taxpayer. The same geniuses who brought you this 'interim' fiasco will undoubtedly be back with another multi-million-dollar plan to 'study' the 'reintroduction' of 'mobility solutions' – which is bureaucraticspeak for 'cars.' Meanwhile, downtown storefronts continue to play musical chairs with 'for lease' signs, proving once again that government intervention is the surest path to economic stagnation.

Perhaps instead of commissioning another white paper from 'experts' who commute in from Los Angeles, our city might consider asking the actual small business owners and residents what they want. You know, the people whose tax dollars are currently funding this administrative merry-go-round. But that would be far too simple, too efficient, and worst of all, it wouldn't involve another lucrative contract for a 'visioning' firm.
