The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
SHERIFF GETS PEANUTS WHILE BUREAUCRATS FEAST ON CEQA EXEMPTIONS!
Your 'supervisors' gave the Sheriff crumbs for FY2026 while continuing their unchallenged reign of environmental regulatory absurdity.
6/19/2026 · Inspired by “Consider recommendations regarding a request to approve the Sheriff’s Office on-going grants for Fiscal Year 2025-2026, as follows: a) Approve the Sheriff’s Office’s on-going grants for Fiscal Year 2025-2026; and b) Determine this action is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Section 13578(b)(5), which are organizational or administrative activities of governments that will not result in direct or indirect physical changes to the environment.” via SB County Board of Supervisors
It was another Monday at the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, where the highlight show included throwing a few pennies at the Sheriff's Office for Fiscal Year 2026. While the men and women in uniform bravely face down the consequences of progressive policies on our streets, the Board, in its infinite wisdom, deigned to 'approve' some 'on-going grants.' Don't spend it all in one place, Sheriff! Meanwhile, the real action was, as always, buried in the CEQA exemptions, where the Board smoothly declared that funding law enforcement operations has no 'direct or indirect physical changes to the environment.' Good to know that prosecuting criminals doesn't create smog or endanger the spotted owl, unlike, say, building new housing or improving roads.
One has to marvel at the bureaucratic gymnastics required to keep CEQA from tripping over its own shoelaces. Apparently, every single administrative or organizational activity of government that isn't actively dismantling an endangered species habitat gets a free pass. It makes you wonder how many 'organizational activities' these same supervisors greenlight for their pet projects, or for studies on things that don't need studying, all while claiming zero environmental impact. It's a gold-plated bypass lane for bureaucracy, but a 10-mile hike through thickets of red tape for anyone trying to actually build something that might improve lives and create jobs.
And that's the Whipping Post Take: The Supervisors, in their benevolent wisdom, have once again proven that while law enforcement can beg for a few grant dollars, the real power lies in deciding what does and doesn’t count as 'environmental impact.' It’s a convenient little loophole they’ve carved out for themselves, ensuring the constant growth of government while shackling everyone else with endless regulations. Don't worry, taxpayers, your money is hard at work... making sure the environmental impact of paperwork is precisely zero. The real question is, what's the environmental impact of endless progressive governance gone unchecked?
