SB CELEBRATES… RECIDIVISM?

Santa Barbara’s chattering class is at it again, celebrating a 'reentry program' for the 'formerly incarcerated.' Per KEYT NewsChannel 3-12, dozens of graduates paraded across a stage, basking in the applause of 'community supporters' and 'local leaders.' One assumes these 'leaders' were too busy patting themselves on the back to ask the important questions, like 'How much did this feel-good fest cost taxpayers?' and 'Are these folks actually, you know, re-entering society as productive members, or just lining up for the next government handout?'

It’s a tale as old as time in this town: find a problem, invent a 'program,' then throw money at it until the problem magically disappears… or, more accurately, until it morphs into a new, more expensive problem requiring another 'program.' While we're all for second chances, shouldn't the focus be on preventing first offenses? Or perhaps ensuring our law enforcement has the resources to keep folks from needing 'reentry' services in the first place? But alas, that might involve being tough on crime, and we can’t have that in Santa Barbara.

Of course, the local media laps it up. It’s a heartwarming story, they tell us, ignoring the fact that many of these 'graduates' are likely back on the streets due to progressive policies that coddle criminals and defund police. The real 'unsung heroes' are the taxpayers footing the bill for this endless cycle of rehabilitation theater, while property crime and vagrancy continue to plague our beautiful county. But don't worry, as long as there are 'formerly incarcerated people' to 'reintegrate,' there will be plenty of grant money to go around for those 'community supporters.'

The real angle KEYT missed, naturally, is who funds these 'reentry' initiatives. Follow the money from the same old foundations and non-profits, all eager to demonstrate their 'impact' while the actual impact on public safety remains a convenient afterthought. It’s less about transforming lives and more about perpetuating the professional grievance industry, ensuring a steady stream of clients and, more importantly, a steady stream of taxpayer dollars. Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens continue to lock their doors a little tighter.
