Noozhawk breathlessly reported on Santa Barbara's annual Juneteenth 'celebration of love' at Plaza del Mar, where the theme was apparently 'Love for the People.' One might assume 'the people' refers exclusively to the small, dedicated cadre of activists and city staffers who dutifully show up to congratulate each other on their wokeness, year after year. While it’s certainly…nice…that the city dedicates a day to a significant historical event, one can’t help but wonder if these local-government-backed block parties are less about genuine reflection and more about performing for the camera, proving they’re ‘on the right side of history.’

Santa Barbara, ever the trend-chaser, eagerly embraces federal holidays with all the enthusiasm of a college freshman discovering intersectionality. But instead of critically examining local historical contexts or addressing present-day issues that truly impact communities, they throw a party with a 'love' theme. It's a convenient way to tick a box and move on, isn't it? Our civic leaders certainly enjoy the photo ops, their faces aglow with the self-satisfaction of a job well… observed. Meanwhile, taxpayers foot the bill for another feel-good function that achieves little beyond generating fluffy news blurbs.

Perhaps if our city council devoted as much energy to reducing the cost of living, fixing our crumbling infrastructure, or tackling rampant homelessness as they do to organizing these annual 'love-ins,' Santa Barbarans might have more to genuinely celebrate. But why address messy, difficult realities when you can simply declare 'love for the people' and call it a day? The real liberation would be freeing local taxpayers from the constant deluge of performative politics. But don't tell the Noozhawk, they're too busy feeling the 'love' to notice.
