The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
POUR DECISIONS: TAX HIKE ON WINE? INDY WHINES, WE CRINGE!
Santa Barbara County Supervisors toast to a new wine tax district, leaving small vintners with a bitter aftertaste and the Independent clutching its pearls.

The Santa Barbara Independent, bless its perpetually concerned heart, is all in a tizzy over some local vintners not clinking glasses with the County's latest bright idea: a Business Improvement District for wine. Imagine! Our perpetually-right Supervisors, apparently bored with regulating your compost and telling you when to water your lawn, decided the area, which already boasts a thriving, world-famous wine industry, needed a brand-new tax. Because nothing stimulates business like adding another fee, right?
Naturally, the Goldwater Institute, a group that apparently believes in quaint notions like 'freedom' and 'not being arbitrarily taxed,' has swooped in to defend a Lompoc vintner who dares to suggest that perhaps, just perhaps, they don't need the County's benevolent guidance (or their hand constantly in their wallet). The Supervisors and the Vintners Association, bless their hearts, cooked this up, probably over a bottle of something expensive funded by… well, you get the picture. One has to wonder who really benefits when the government 'improves' a business district. Hint: It's rarely the small guy just trying to make an honest living without getting fleeced for another 'marketing campaign' or 'economic development' study with dubious results.
This isn't about promoting wine; it's about promoting the County's bottom line and the consultants who get rich off these schemes. While the Indy frets about the social dynamics of this 'dispute,' The Whipping Post sees a familiar pattern: government overreach, unnecessary taxation, and the usual suspects in suits high-fiving over another revenue stream disguised as a public service. Small businesses, always the target, are left footing the bill for grand plans hatched by those who've never actually had to make payroll. Cheers to that, Supervisors, as ordinary folks pay through the nose, yet again.
