It seems even in the hallowed halls of Santa Barbara County's justice system, the rules are mere suggestions for some, particularly when it comes to the taxpayer-funded gravy train. Noozhawk, in its infinite wisdom, recently reported on a Sheriff’s custody sergeant pleading not guilty to charges of swindling the public purse for overtime hours he supposedly didn't log. One almost has to admire the chutzpah, if not the ethics, of those who see an open ledger and just… *fill it in*.

Now, we’re not saying the system is ripe for exploitation, but when a sergeant in charge of custody is accused of playing fast and loose with timecards, it begs the question: exactly how many other invisible hands are reaching into the cookie jar? Is this an isolated incident, or just another peek behind the curtain at the endless parade of 'creative accounting' that keeps our county government chugging along, ever-expanding its budget while delivering the same old results?

The irony is almost too rich: a custody sergeant, meant to enforce the rules, is now facing the consequence of allegedly breaking them. One might hope this little kerfuffle provides a much-needed jolt to the county’s notoriously lax oversight. Perhaps a few less 'diversity and inclusion' seminars and a few more actual audits might be in order? Maybe next time, they’ll install punch clocks that actually work, or better yet, simply hire enough people to do the job without padding the overtime.
