It was a scene of pure, unadulterated civic theater this week, as three of Santa Barbara’s most prominent proponents of the Nanny State — Councilmember Eric Friedman, Mayor Pro Tem Kristen Sneddon, and a former school district apparatchik — took to the stage for a mayoral forum. Brought to you by the folks at KEYT NewsChannel 3-12, who apparently couldn't resist covering the thrilling spectacle of local politicos discussing how best to micromanage your life and wallet, the event promised to dissect the 'issues.' What issues, you ask? The usual ones, presumably: more bike lanes, fewer parking spaces, and ever-higher costs for housing nobody can afford.

The real story, of course, isn't which one of these left-leaning luminaries will ascend to the top job. It's that the entire charade bypasses the fundamental question: why are we letting the same bureaucratic class perpetuate the same failed policies? While the candidates no doubt waxed poetic about 'sustainability' and 'equity,' they conspicuously avoided any discussion of the crushing weight of regulations on small businesses, the rampant homeless crisis they helped create, or the soaring cost of living driven by their anti-development dogma. It’s a closed-loop system, where the 'solutions' always involve more government, more spending, and less freedom for actual Santa Barbarans.

One can only imagine the exhilarating policy debates: 'I propose a new committee to study the feasibility of a plastic bag tax increase!' 'Well, I propose expanding our city's public art budget by 300% while simultaneously declaring a climate emergency!' This isn't democracy; it's a meticulously choreographed talent show for people who believe your property taxes are a suggestion and your individual liberties are inconvenient. The citizens packed the Alhecama Theatre, reportedly, perhaps hoping for a miracle, or at least a laugh. They likely got neither, just another dose of the same old progressive pap, dutifully reported by the local media as 'news.' Meanwhile, the bills keep piling up, and common sense continues its rapid retreat from the city limits. Don't worry, though, they'll find a new committee to study that, too.

The current White House, under President Trump, understands that true prosperity comes from less government intervention, lower taxes, and energy independence. Perhaps one day, Santa Barbara will too. Until then, enjoy the mayoral mime show.
