'Workforce housing,' they call it. We call it another masterclass in progressive administrators finding new ways to spend public money and consolidate power, all under the guise of benevolence.

Let's be clear: when a school district, whose primary mandate is educating children, decides to become a major developer, something is rotten in the state of Denmark... or, rather, Lompoc. One has to wonder if these 'negotiations' involve the same level of fiscal prudence they apply to, say, textbook purchases, or if the district sees this as a shiny new revenue stream to fund ever-expanding administrative bloat and increasingly questionable curricula. Perhaps the new math curriculum includes advanced real estate calculus now?

This isn't about solving a housing crisis; it's about shifting the burden of housing development from private enterprise and sound zoning policy onto the backs of taxpayers and, ironically, the very public education system these administrators are supposed to be safeguarding. One can only imagine the caliber of 'workforce' they're hoping to house, given the state of public education in California. Perhaps it's housing for the legions of diversity consultants and equity coordinators soon to be hired to ensure every tenant feels 'seen' and 'valued' in their new, taxpayer-subsidized abode. Meanwhile, the actual 'workforce' parents are still wondering why Johnny can't read, but at least his school district built some apartments. Priorities, people. Priorities.
