The Santa Maria Times breathlessly reported this week that Ricardo Batalla is throwing his well-worn hat back into the ring for City Council District 1. Apparently, returning to 'a neighborhood that holds personal significance' is the new code for 'I need to remind you I exist.' We're sure the folks at Oakley Park were absolutely thrilled to be a campaign backdrop for what promises to be another thrilling season of tax-and-spend politics.

Batalla, a self-proclaimed 'community leader' – which, let's be honest, often just means 'person who shows up to a lot of meetings' – is gearing up to tackle the pressing issues of Santa Maria. We can almost hear the talking points now: 'affordable housing' (read: more developer handouts), 'climate action' (read: higher utility bills), and 'social justice' (read: bigger government, fewer individual liberties). One wonders if he'll mention the exploding pension liabilities or the ever-present question of where all the new 'revitalization' money actually goes besides consultants' pockets.
