Santa Barbara's very own Senator Monique Limón recently enjoyed a brief, unearned stint as "Acting Governor" – the political equivalent of letting an assistant drive the company jet while the actual pilot is refilling their latte. Edhat, bless its heart, dutifully reported on this momentous occasion, where Limón, with all the gravitas of a substitute teacher, signed four bills into law. One can only imagine the sheer thrill of it all: a brief taste of executive power, far removed from the mundane reality of actually winning a statewide election.

Among the legislative masterpieces she rubber-stamped were bills that, surprise surprise, lean heavily into the progressive playbook. We're talking more mandates, more bureaucracy, and undoubtedly more ways for state agencies to micromanage California into oblivion. While her actual role in these bills was likely limited to showing up and holding a pen, the political theater is crucial, especially for one always angling for the next rung up the ladder. Every signature is a photo op, every photo op a campaign ad, and every campaign ad a step further from actual accountability for the state's ever-growing problems.

What Edhat and others missed, however, is the delicious irony: while Limón was busy playing governor, back in Santa Barbara, residents are still grappling with the fallout of endless progressive policies she's championed. From rising costs to inexplicable regulations, the very issues that make Californians flee this state continue to be blessed by her legislative touch. But hey, at least she got to sign some papers and feel important for an afternoon. Perhaps next time, she'll get a bigger pen or even a red cape.

One of the bills, SB 1440, a 'local government' measure, sailed through with little fanfare. Yet, anyone paying attention knows these innocuous-sounding bills often contain the quiet provisions that empower Sacramento to further erode local control, pushing more unfunded mandates onto cities and counties. Expect more housing projects forced on communities and increased costs for local services, all thanks to these seemingly benevolent acts of legislative minor-league ambition.
