LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS HOSTS ANOTHER NIGHT OF POLITICAL THEATERThe Ballot
Santa Maria Times · The Whipping Post · NO.278 · PANEL 5/6 · SB-108

The Santa Maria Times, bless their hearts, recently reported on the latest political spectacle: candidate forums for the 5th District Supervisor and Santa Maria City Council races, graciously organized by the League of Women Voters of North Santa Barbara County. What a treat! Residents, no doubt, lined up around the block for the chance to hear the usual platitudes and carefully rehearsed non-answers that pass for political discourse these days.

One can only imagine the scintillating policy debates. "More affordable housing!" someone surely chirped, without daring to mention the crippling regulations and zoning restrictions passed by the very people seeking these offices. Another likely promised "environmental protection," which, translated from bureaucratic-speak, means more taxes on gas and fewer permits for the businesses that actually create jobs and keep our economy moving. And let's not forget the evergreen call for "community engagement," code for endless, pointless meetings where everyone agrees to disagree while nothing actually gets done.

Frankly, after years of watching these charades, The Whipping Post is tired of the predictable performances. It's a progressive echo chamber, designed to give the illusion of democratic process while subtly steering public opinion leftward. Why bother with thoughtful conservative voices when you can have a parade of hand-wringing ideologues promising everything from 'social equity' to 'climate resilience' – all terms that, conveniently, necessitate more government spending and less individual liberty? These forums aren't about informing voters; they're about validating a pre-determined narrative.

The real story, as always, is what's *not* said. No mention of the ballooning county budget, the unfunded pension liabilities, or the stifling effects of progressive policies on small businesses. No hard questions about how these grand visions will actually be paid for, beyond vague promises of 'grants' from our benevolent federal government – grants that, of course, come from your federal tax dollars. It's a broken record, and Santa Barbara County taxpayers deserve better than this carefully curated political theater.
