The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
JUDGE ADAMS RE-ELECTION: INDY SAYS HE’S ‘PLEASANT,’ WE SAY ‘FINALLY, SOMEONE NOT ACTIVIST!’
The Santa Barbara Independent lauded our local judge for the shocking reason of being 'fair-minded.' Prepare yourselves for a judicial miracle: a jurist who actually follows the law!

In a display of investigative journalism that bravely ventures beyond the usual pronouncements of imminent climate catastrophe or the sheer brilliance of the latest bike lane, the Santa Barbara Independent has thrown its considerable weight behind the re-election of Judge Adams. Their groundbreaking justification? He's 'pleasant,' 'objective,' and 'fair-minded.' Hold the presses! A judge who actually, dare we say, judges? One can only assume this is a radical new concept in our esteemed halls of justice, where 'objective' apparently means not openly weeping during sentencing or replacing the scales with a 'social justice' infographic.
Now, the Independent, bless its perpetually bewildered heart, also noted Judge Adams arrives 'exceedingly early' and takes 'extensive notes.' One must marvel at the bar set for judicial excellence these days. It’s almost as if showing up on time and knowing the cases before you is now a unique selling proposition, rather than, you know, the absolute minimum requirement for the job. Perhaps next they’ll praise a prosecutor for not prosecuting sentient houseplants, or a public defender for remembering their client's name without prompting.
But here's the real story everyone missed while the Independent was busy marvelling at basic adult competency: Judge Adams, unlike many of his ideologically-driven peers, actually adheres to the quaint notion of interpreting laws as written, rather than as he wishes they were written after a particularly inspiring departmental diversity seminar. In a county where justice often seems to be served à la carte, depending on one's political affiliation or victimhood status, Adams's steadfast, un-woke approach is a breath of fresh air. He believes in things like 'rule of law' and 'due process,' concepts so old-fashioned they might as well be powdered wigs and quill pens. No wonder the establishment finds him so 'pleasant' – he's not actively trying to dismantle Western civilization from the bench.
So, while the Independent gushes about his pleasant demeanor, what they're actually (and inadvertently) celebrating is a judge who isn't a judicial activist, isn't beholden to the latest progressive dogma, and might actually – gasp! – apply the law equally to all. It's almost as if voters are tired of judges legislating from the bench and want someone who just does their job. Imagine that. The sheer radicalism of it all.
