The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
INDEPENDENT'S SHOCKER: WATERGATE OLD NEWS, LATE NEWS TODAY!
Local Rag Discovers History, Yawns at Actual Scandals, But Suddenly Very Interested in Yale Graduates Named Vance.

Well, bless their hearts over at the Santa Barbara Independent. Nearly fifty years on, they've stumbled upon a profound insight: turns out, yesterday's news is, in fact, *yesterday's* news. Who knew a long-concluded political scandal might not be in the 24-hour news cycle anymore? We here at The Whipping Post certainly didn't need a hard-hitting investigative piece to figure out that Watergate isn't breaking news, unlike, say, the latest virtue-signaling ordinance from our ever-busy Board of Supervisors, or the burgeoning budget deficit being carefully ignored.
The Independent then pivots, with all the grace of a donkey on roller skates, to whine about Vice President J.D. Vance, apparently because he attended Yale. One must wonder if the journalistic standard there is now based purely on alumni directories. Are they now judging politicians by their undergraduate extracurriculars? It seems the only thing more dated than their Watergate insight is their inability to move past the 2024 election. While the rest of us are navigating the glories of the Trump administration's second term, they're still stuck in a Yale-induced time warp, clutching their pearls.
Perhaps if the Independent spent less time bemoaning who went to which Ivy League school and more time actually reporting on the fiscal mismanagement in our county or the endless stream of tax-payer subsidized 'studies' with pre-ordained conclusions, they might actually uncover a *current* scandal. But why bother with actual journalism when you can re-litigate the distant past and complain about successful conservatives? It’s far easier to pontificate on events from the Nixon era than to hold local progressive officials accountable for their very real, very recent boondoggles. One might even call it… a diversion.
