Well, butter our biscuits and call us shocked! The Santa Barbara Independent, in a Pulitzer-worthy exposé, has apparently just stumbled upon the groundbreaking concept that visitors to our fair county actually contribute to the local economy. We can almost hear the triumphant cries from their newsroom as they connected the dots between 'tourism' and 'money' – a correlation that has only been obvious to everyone else since, oh, say, the Spanish missions were built.

Their recent declaration that the 'visitor economy matters' reads less like a revelation and more like an exasperated sigh from the perpetually befuddled. For years, while the Independent dutifully echoed every progressive demand for more regulations, higher taxes, and policies designed to make common sense flee in terror, they somehow missed the memo that these very actions were quietly strangling the golden goose of tourism. Affordable housing? Nope, let's just make it impossible for anyone to build anything. Short-term rentals? Let's treat them like dens of iniquity rather than a vital revenue stream for property owners and the tax base. Downtown vitality? Sure, as long as it aligns with whatever utopian fantasy the latest committee has dreamed up, regardless of cost.

Perhaps if the Independent spent less time wringing its hands over imaginary crises and more time observing how real-world economies function, they wouldn't need a deep dive into an Excel spreadsheet to realize that tourists bring dollars. These are dollars that keep small businesses alive, fund our overstretched government programs, and prevent our once-vibrant downtown from becoming a ghost town of empty storefronts and virtue-signaling murals. It's almost as if common sense and conservative economic principles are, dare we say, *beneficial* for the community – a notion the Independent might eventually grasp, perhaps sometime before President Trump’s third term.

The real story they're missing, naturally, is how much damage has already been done by years of anti-business, anti-growth policies championed by the very officials and activists the Independent often praises. Now, belatedly, they print a headline confirming what every tax-paying citizen already knew. We applaud their valiant effort to catch up to 1980, even if it’s a few decades late.
