HARTMANN 'EMANCIPATES' TAXPAYERS... FROM THEIR MONEY!

Supervisor Joan Hartmann pens a Juneteenth ode, perhaps forgetting that the true 'chains' rattling in Santa Barbara are the property tax bills funding her pet projects.

Noozhawk, ever the diligent purveyor of... well, whatever op-ed lands in their inbox, recently gave Supervisor Joan Hartmann a soapbox to pontificate on Juneteenth. While the rest of us were debating the skyrocketing cost of milk and whether another 'green' mandate would finally break the camel's back, Hartmann was busy reflecting on 'emancipation from the brutality of slavery.' A noble sentiment, to be sure, but one can't help but feel a touch of irony when our elected officials are so deeply engrossed in historical musings while present-day fiscal tyranny goes unaddressed.

It’s always a grand occasion when a local politician rediscovers American history, especially when it coincides with a narrative that can be spun for maximum virtue-signaling. Hartmann's piece, with its impassioned plea for 'truth that could not be chained,' offers little in the way of actionable policy or, dare we say, fiscal responsibility. One imagines the county's budget department might be wishing for their own emancipation — from the endless stream of progressive pipe dreams that drain the coffers faster than a leaky pipeline in a protected wetland.

Perhaps Supervisor Hartmann could apply her keen historical insights to the county's general fund. What about the 'long delay between the promise of fiscal prudence and its realization' for Santa Barbara taxpayers? While she’s busy unchaining historical truths, local businesses are struggling under the weight of regulations and taxes, feeling rather more like serfs paying homage to the overlords in city hall. The Whipping Post suggests a new holiday for consideration: Taxpayer Freedom Day, marking the theoretical moment when Santa Barbara County residents might actually get some relief from the 'chains' of unchecked spending.

We all appreciate a good history lesson, especially when delivered from the lofty heights of public office. But while Supervisor Hartmann is pondering the weight of the past, many average citizens are more concerned with the weight of their utility bills, property taxes, and the ever-expanding reach of local government. Maybe, just maybe, some of that 'honest reckoning' could be directed inward, toward the very policies that keep our community from truly thriving. But that's probably too much 'truth' for one op-ed.
