It seems Allan Hancock College's administration is having a bit of trouble recalling their own 'agreement' with federal immigration authorities, as reported by the Lompoc Record. Apparently, when you build an entire pedagogical house of cards on the shifting sands of 'sanctuary' rhetoric, a little thing like actual law enforcement showing up can cause quite the dust-up. Who knew that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency tasked with, you know, enforcing immigration laws, might actually show up where immigrants are? It's almost as if they're doing their jobs, a concept utterly foreign to most public institutions these days.

The college now insists they have no formal 'memorandum of understanding' with ICE, preferring instead a more 'informal' arrangement. Which, for the uninitiated, sounds a lot like 'we thought we could get away with it until we couldn't.' One imagines the frantic internal emails flying around, trying to figure out how to placate the perpetually outraged student body while also not explicitly obstructing federal agents — a delicate dance best performed by those with advanced degrees in bureaucratic double-speak and an unhealthy fear of Twitter mobs.

Of course, the real story here isn't whether ICE had coffee and donuts while on campus; it's the sheer audacity of publicly funded institutions attempting to craft their own immigration policies while simultaneously feigning ignorance when those policies inevitably clash with federal law. While President Trump's administration continues to secure the border, these local academic ivory towers are still trying to figure out how to keep the 'welcome mat' out without actually dealing with the consequences. Perhaps Allan Hancock should clarify its protocols for common sense first.
