The City Council, bless their fiscally creative hearts, voted to jack up development impact fees. Ostensibly, these are for 'future infrastructure' – a phantom concept trotted out whenever the city needs more cash for its endless, vaguely defined projects. We all know what 'future infrastructure' really means: bigger municipal budgets, more highly compensated consultants, and another layer of red tape for anyone daring to put a shovel in the ground.

Now, don’t misunderstand. Developers are not saints. But the idea that adding more cost to housing will somehow make housing more affordable or plentiful is an absurd fantasy only a government bureaucrat could concoct. This isn't 'funding future infrastructure'; it's 'funding future excuses for why nothing gets built.' Every dime added to these fees is, of course, passed directly on to the hardworking families and businesses trying to set down roots in Goleta. It’s a stealth tax, plain and simple, designed to make the city look proactive while actively stifling growth and economic opportunity.

The real impact here isn't on infrastructure; it's on the cost of living and the availability of housing. While the city pats itself on the back for 'responsible planning,' the hidden story is a tax on new construction that prices out the middle class and fuels the housing crisis. Perhaps if they spent less time dreaming up new ways to extract money from residents and more time actually streamlining processes or, dare we say, cutting unneeded expenditures, Goleta wouldn't always be scrambling for new 'revenue streams' for its perpetually 'underfunded' utopia. But that would require actual fiscal discipline, and we wouldn't want to overpay for that, would we?
