The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
GOLETA'S COUNCIL RACE: MORE BOREDOM THAN BLOODSPORT, BUT WE'LL TAKE IT
Voters are bracing for another riveting November election, where the only thing less exciting than the candidates' platforms is the prospect of actual change in the People's Republic of Goleta.

Power & PoliticsThe Santa Barbara Independent, bless its perpetually earnest heart, recently reminded us that Goleta's City Council is, indeed, still a thing, and that two of its coveted seats are up for grabs. Imagine the collective gasp of apathy that swept across the county! Incumbents Luz Reyes-Martín and James Kyriaco are reportedly facing off against challengers Rollin Gartzke and Phebe Mansur. While The Indy's blurb suggested this might be news, most residents were likely busy trying to navigate the increasingly byzantine regulations imposed by these very councils, or perhaps just marveling at how expensive it is to exist here.
Frankly, the lack of fireworks in this election is less a sign of civic harmony and more a testament to the suffocating political monoculture that has taken root in our coastal enclaves. These aren't elections; they're more like carefully choreographed ballets where the outcome is predetermined, and the only suspense is whether anyone will actually bother to show up to watch. Meanwhile, the city's budget continues its annual ballooning act, fueled by taxes and fees that somehow never quite manage to solve the actual problems, but always seem to expand the bureaucratic footprint.
What The Indy probably missed – and what we're always here to point out – is the sheer predictability of it all. This isn't just about four names on a ballot; it's about the relentless march of progressive groupthink that ensures Goleta, much like its elder sibling Santa Barbara, remains a bastion of virtue-signaling and over-regulation. The real story isn't who wins, but how much more of your wallet will be lighter after they do, all while pretending they're making life better for everyone (except, of course, for anyone who wants to build anything, drill for anything, or generally conduct commerce without a dozen permits and an ideological purity test). It's a miracle anyone bothers to run at all, unless, of course, they enjoy the particular kind of status that comes with rubber-stamping the status quo.
