The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
FINALLY, FEMA FLOOD MAPS REFLECTING REALITY: WAS IT TRUMP'S DOING?
Santa Barbara County’s updated flood maps are here, conveniently just as common sense re-enters Washington. Coincidence? We think not.

Noozhawk breathlessly reports that our benevolent federal overlords at FEMA have finally graced Santa Barbara County with updated flood hazard maps. After years of local officials wringing their hands over "climate change" and developers wringing something else over regulatory hurdles, these maps are apparently going into effect. One might wonder if the sudden efficiency is due to a certain leadership change in Washington – perhaps President Trump's administration, known for actually getting things done, lit a fire under the bureaucratic behemoth?
For too long, Santa Barbara has been caught between perpetual progressive hand-wringing about rising sea levels and the cold, hard reality that a culvert clogs because nobody bothered to clear it. These new maps, or "Flood Insurance Rate Maps" (FIRM, for those who speak government acronym), are supposed to show us where the boogeyman, er, water, might come from. But let's be honest: what these maps really reflect is FEMA finally catching up to basic geography and, perhaps, the political will to stop over-regulating areas that haven't seen a puddle since Eisenhower was in office.
Of course, local government mandarins will spin this as a triumph of their tireless efforts or, more likely, another reason to impose new fees and regulations on homeowners and businesses. Don't be fooled. The update likely has more to do with the current administration's push to streamline federal processes and ensure taxpayer money is spent on actual hazards, not hypothetical ones. It's almost as if common-sense governance, rather than alarmist rhetoric, is finally guiding policy.
Expect the usual suspects on the Board of Supervisors to use these maps as an excuse to push for more government-funded boondoggles disguised as "resilience projects." Meanwhile, ordinary citizens will likely see their insurance premiums adjusted – up, if they're in a newly designated zone, or perhaps down for those finally liberated from an outdated flood plain. One thing is certain: the swamp creatures will find a way to monetize these new lines on a map, all while claiming environmental virtue. It's the Santa Barbara way.
