The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
COUNTY TO WAIVE RULES FOR RETIREE, CLAIMS 'CRITICAL NEED' AFTER 'RETIRING' IT
Santa Barbara County Supervisors demonstrate their legendary foresight by rehiring a 'retired' healthcare practitioner for a position they apparently didn't realize was, you know, critical.
Power & PoliticsThe Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, in its infinite wisdom, recently tackled a truly pressing issue: rehiring someone who just retired from a 'critical' position. It seems the geniuses in County government, specifically the Health Department's Clinical Care Program Division, were caught flat-footed when Alicia Jacobson retired, suddenly realizing her role was, in fact, necessary. Who could have seen that coming? Apparently, not the folks paid to plan for such eventualities.
Our vigilant Supervisors, ever keen to follow the letter of the law when it suits them, were asked to certify this 'critical need' to waive a 180-day retirement exclusion, effectively rubber-stamping the Health Director's plea to bring Ms. Jacobson back as 'Extra-Help.' This administrative circus, designed to keep the wheels of bureaucracy spinning, will now allow her to work part-time, not exceeding 700 hours, for ten months, all while the County 'recruits to fill her vacant position.' It's a miracle of modern government: retire someone, then declare them essential, all within the blink of an eye.
And because no County action is complete without a nod to the utterly irrelevant, the Supervisors sagely determined that rehiring a retired person doesn't constitute a 'Project' under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Of course not! It's just more administrative reshuffling, which, as everyone knows, never results in any direct or indirect changes to the environment, unless you count the environmental impact of taxpayer dollars being lit on fire through such brilliant planning. One might wonder if the 'critical need' actually stems from the County's own inability to manage its workforce, rather than any genuine staffing crisis. This is what happens when you let the same old unelected bureaucrats run the show, prioritizing paperwork over preparedness. It's a wonder they even manage to keep the lights on.
