The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors

COUNTY TO THROW $12M AT 'STREETS' PROBLEM, EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULT!

Supervisors greenlight another federal grant to 'address' homelessness, proving the only thing more boundless than government spending is its optimism.

Santa Barbara County’s enlightened Board of Supervisors is aiming to apply for a cool $12 million from the federal government, courtesy of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This munificent sum, spread over four years, will supposedly fund their cleverly acronymed 'STREETS' program, designed to solve the chronic issues that plague our public spaces. While the Supervisors might genuinely believe this cash infusion will magically make the entrenched problems of drug addiction and homelessness vanish from our sidewalks, we here at The Whipping Post have seen this movie before, and it always ends with more paperwork and less pavement pizza.

The official agenda item, a veritable prose poem of bureaucratic speak, blithely states this organizational maneuver won't require an environmental review. Of course not! We're just throwing money at a human problem, not building a new luxury condo complex. It’s comforting to know that shuffling federal dollars into county coffers is so utterly without consequence, it doesn’t even merit a peep from the all-seeing eye of CEQA. One almost suspects the endless cycle of grant applications and 'pilot programs' is less about tangible results and more about keeping a certain segment of the population employed in the 'solution' industry.

Here’s what the other local rags glossed over: this isn't just about 'helping.' This is about consolidating power and expanding the county's already impressive bureaucratic footprint, all on the taxpayers' dime (or, in this case, the national debt's dime). Every new federal dollar comes with strings attached, inevitably leading to more oversight, more compliance officers, and more 'consultants' who somehow manage to scoop up a hefty percentage before a single street person sees a 'service.' Meanwhile, common-sense solutions, like upholding basic laws and truly rehabilitating individuals rather than enabling cycles of dependency, remain conveniently off the table. The only thing 'street' about this grant is where the tax money will end up: flowing straight out of your pocket onto the bureaucratic bypass.
