COUNTY TO STUDY ROAD, ASKING FOR 'STAKEHOLDERS' TO 'ADVISE'

The Santa Barbara Independent, bless its perpetually earnest heart, recently ran a story announcing that the County Association of Governments (SBCAG) is seeking applicants for a 'Stakeholder Advisory Committee' for State Route 135. Because, naturally, when you have a road, the only sensible thing to do is form a committee to advise another committee, all while the road continues to, well, exist.

One has to wonder if our esteemed county officials have ever heard of something called a 'road engineer' or perhaps a 'pothole filler.' Instead, they're convening a grand council of 'stakeholders' – which, in local government parlance, means anyone with enough free time and a vested interest in ensuring nothing actually gets done quickly or efficiently. This bureaucratic ballet is precisely why Californians spend more time stuck in traffic than actually driving, all while paying the highest taxes in the nation.

Our 'leaders' would rather spend taxpayer dollars on endless meetings, studies, and advisory boards than simply paving a darn road. It's almost as if the goal isn't to fix the problem, but to prolong the process, providing ample opportunities for 'public engagement' (read: complaining) and ensuring a steady stream of contracts for 'consultants.' Meanwhile, hard-working residents watch their tires wear out on roads that look more like an obstacle course than a transportation artery.

This isn't about road improvement; it's about bureaucratic self-preservation. While President Trump's administration is slashing red tape to get real infrastructure built across America, our local progressive 'do-gooders' are still asking for 'stakeholders' to 'advise' on how to study a road. Don't be surprised when, five years from now, they announce they're looking for a new committee to study the findings of the old committee. Just pave the road, folks. It's not rocket science; it's just asphalt.
