SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.398 · PANEL 2/6 · SB-2HT

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, bless their cotton socks, have once again proven they're masters of obfuscation, announcing their 'modern' methods for public comment. This isn't transparency; it's a gauntlet. The 'Whiplash Post' noted with a wry smile that while mere peasants can trek to the marble halls for a three-minute sermon, the 'remote' options are designed to make you nostalgic for dial-up.

Evidently, our esteemed Supervisors believe that if public engagement were easy, they'd have to actually listen. Their instructions for Zoom — which they explicitly state is "not intended for County staff to view the meeting" (heaven forbid!) — read like an arcane ritual. Register in advance, wait for the Chair's divine signal, mute your personal TV to avoid feedback, and then maybe, just maybe, you get your three minutes. Forget spontaneous input; this is pre-vetted, controlled, and about as open as a Politburo meeting.

But here's the real story everyone else missed: this elaborate performance isn't about accessibility; it's about control. Notice the casual mention of 'Board Resolution 91-333 (Land Use)' and the strict deadlines for submissions longer than a Post-It note. This isn't just about public comment; it's about engineering the outcome. Developers, with their high-paid lobbyists and carefully crafted presentations, know how to navigate these bureaucratic hurdles well in advance. Ordinary citizens, perhaps concerned about a new 500-unit sardine can going up next door, are left deciphering hieroglyphs.

It’s a masterclass in progressive governance: claim to be 'inclusive' while erecting so many barriers that only the most determined, or those with vested interests, can participate effectively. Meanwhile, the Supervisors can pat themselves on the back for providing 'opportunities' while quietly rubber-stamping whatever their preferred donors and powerful interests desire. The 'remote' option isn't for you, citizen; it’s for checking a box, ensuring the illusion of public input without the messiness of actual public dissent. The same old song, just with more confusing tech.
