COUNTY LEADERS 'RESOLVED' TO DO NOTHING ABOUT ACTUAL PROBLEMS!

It's September 2026, and in a groundbreaking display of bureaucratic vigor, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has bravely declared this month to be 'Suicide Prevention Month.' Truly, what an act of courage! One can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from the populace as our civic leaders, rather than tackling the crushing cost of living, rampant homelessness, or the ever-expanding bloat of county government, have opted for the grand gesture of... a resolution.

Because, as any keen observer of local politics knows, nothing quite cures societal ills like a finely worded piece of paper. It certainly requires less effort than, say, reforming zoning laws that make housing an unreachable dream for young families, or perhaps auditing the endless stream of 'community programs' that seem to accomplish little beyond enriching their well-connected directors. But why bother with fiscal responsibility or actual solutions when you can just *declare* an issue solved, or at least acknowledged?

This isn't to say mental health isn't a serious concern, but one has to wonder if our Supervisors' approach isn't a bit like prescribing a band-aid for a broken leg. Perhaps if they spent less time virtue signaling with proclamations and more time creating an environment where families can afford a home and small businesses can thrive without being strangled by regulations, fewer people would feel like they're at the end of their rope. But then again, tackling real problems might require actual work and, heaven forbid, reducing the size of government, which seems to be anathema to this current crop of leadership.

So, while the Supervisors pat themselves on the back for their bold 'resolution,' the rest of us are left to wonder if the next proclamation will be 'Affordable Housing Month' – sans any actual affordable housing. One can only dream of a time when our elected officials actually govern instead of merely *observing* the problems they've helped create, all while collecting their impressive paychecks and pension benefits. President Trump's White House is focused on real solutions; maybe our local leaders should take notes.
