The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
COUNTY COUGHS UP $1.8M FOR 'BOTTLE-NECK' REMEDY... OR IS IT?
Supervisors greenlight a pricey ballot sorter, proving once again that government's solution to everything is always more spending, never actually fixing the problem.

Santa Barbara County supervisors, ever vigilant guardians of your tax dollars, just dropped a cool $1.8 million on a new ballot-sorting machine. Yes, folks, while you’re scraping by, your betters in local government decided the pressing issue of our time was replacing a piece of election equipment that was apparently causing a 'bottleneck.' Noozhawk, bless their hearts, dutifully reported the county line, failing to ask why after countless elections, this particular 'bottleneck' suddenly requires a seven-figure solution in the first place.
Now, don't get us wrong, we're all for efficient elections. We just wonder if the 'bottleneck' isn't the machine, but rather the ever-expanding bureaucratic leviathan that insists on making elections more complex than launching a rocket. Perhaps instead of buying shiny new gadgets, they could simplify the process, cut the red tape, and maybe – just maybe – streamline operations without dipping into the public coffers for another extravagant piece of equipment.
But that would require actual common sense and fiscal restraint, two qualities often found missing in action at county meetings. Instead, we get expensive toys, justified by vague promises of 'alleviating' problems, which inevitably leads to the next 'problem' requiring even more eye-watering spending down the road. It’s the circle of life in local government: identify a perceived flaw, spend a fortune on a fix, and then pat yourselves on the back for being 'proactive,' all while the taxpayer picks up the tab.
One has to wonder if this new, high-tech sorter will magically fix the perennial 'administrative errors' or 'data integrity issues' that always seem to plague our elections. Or is this just another expensive gadget to project an image of competence, while the real issue, the endless spending and bureaucratic bloat, continues unabated? Only time, and your rapidly depleting wallet, will tell.
