SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.250 · PANEL 6/6 · SB-5M9

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom and boundless enthusiasm for other people’s money, just gave themselves the green light on the Fiscal Year 2026-2027 budget. While the official agenda item from the Board of Supervisors was a masterpiece of bureaucratese, what it really boiled down to was this: more spending, less accountability, and a healthy dose of 'don't ask, don't tell' when it comes to what's really happening behind the numbers.

Our vigilant, albeit slightly sleep-deprived, Whipping Post analysts detect a familiar scent. That lovely little clause about delegating authority to the Board Chair for 'single-year renewals of grants and contracts' up to 10% more than last year, all without another peep from the full Board? That's not just efficiency, folks; that's a loophole big enough to drive a fleet of county-funded electric vehicles through. It means less oversight on those juicy contracts – ideal for ensuring everyone's favored pet projects keep getting fed, no questions asked.

And let’s not forget the classic move: declaring that these "fiscal activities are not a project subject to CEQA." Translation: spending millions of taxpayer dollars creating new positions and expanding the county's footprint apparently has zero environmental impact. Only in Santa Barbara can you increase government bureaucracy and simultaneously declare it 'environmentally neutral.' It's almost as magical as their ability to make our property taxes disappear into the ether.

So, as the Board pats itself on the back for another year of fiscal prudence (a term we use advisedly), remember who really foots the bill for this annual festival of progressive largesse. Look closely at those salary resolutions and position changes; chances are, you'll find more bureaucrats to hire, more studies to commission, and fewer actual solutions. It's the Santa Barbara way: expand government, raise taxes, and then tell us it was all for the good of the environment and equity, naturally.
