COUNTY BOSSES CLING TO CEQA CLUB: LOCAL CONTROL? OR JUST MORE RED TAPE?Power & Politics
Noozhawk · The Whipping Post · NO.585 · PANEL 6/6 · SB-4IF

The five wise-acres on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, proving once again their unwavering commitment to… well, themselves, have officially dug in their heels against Proposition 45. Noozhawk dutifully reported that this measure, designed to rein in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), apparently threatens 'local authority.' Right. Because nothing says 'local control' like a byzantine regulatory scheme that benefits precisely nobody but consultants, lawyers, and the elected officials who wield it like a medieval mace.

Let’s be crystal clear: when these folks fret about 'undermining local authority,' what they really mean is 'undermining our ability to gum up development, inflate project costs, and extract maximum political capital from every single permit application.' CEQA isn't a shield for the environment; it’s a shakedown artist’s dream, allowing every special interest and NIMBY with a grudge to hold projects hostage, often for years, while the meter runs on consultants' fees and legal bills. The notion that streamlining this process would somehow imperil Santa Barbara is laughable, unless your business model relies on blocking new housing and affordable energy.

The real story Noozhawk missed, buried under the usual bureaucratic blather, is the sheer hypocrisy of it all. The very 'local authority' they so vehemently defend is the same authority that has turned Santa Barbara County into a regulatory quagmire, driving out businesses and making homeownership a pipe dream for anyone who isn't already a millionaire. Proposition 45 threatens to yank the CEQA rug out from under their feet, forcing them to actually make decisions based on common sense and economic reality, rather than endless studies and the whims of the loudest activist groups. Good riddance, we say.
