Well, folks, another election cycle, another round of the Lompoc Record breathlessly reporting on 'leads' for the usual suspects. Salud Carbajal is 'retaining his lead' for the 24th Congressional District, while Melinda Greene is supposedly still ahead for County Clerk-Recorder Assessor. One has to wonder if these 'leads' are based on actual votes or just the wishes of the county's permanent political class. With the ballot count moving at a pace that suggests officials are personally hand-painting each tally mark, it feels less like an election and more like a carefully choreographed unveiling of pre-determined outcomes.

It’s almost as if the powers-that-be in Santa Barbara County prefer their election results like their artisanal bread — slow-baked, slightly chewy, and entirely predictable. The 'key races' mentioned by the Record are, of course, key only to those already firmly entrenched in the one-party rule that defines our local political landscape. Any real challenge to the status quo is usually buried under a mountain of 'provisional' ballots or simply ignored until the 'official' results come out, usually featuring the same smiles and boilerplate victory speeches.

Let's be honest: these 'leads' are less about the will of the people and more about the will of the well-funded consultants and party machines. While the rest of us are still deciding if we want paper or plastic at the grocery store, the county's election sorcerers are conjuring up 'leads' that ensure continuity for those who benefit most from it. It’s hard to call it a competitive race when the finish line seems to have been moved closer for some runners than for others.

So, while the Lompoc Record trots out the usual headlines, The Whipping Post knows better. These aren't leads; they're the inevitable consequence of a system designed to keep the same faces in power, regardless of what the actual voters might prefer. Perhaps next time they'll just save everyone the trouble and declare the winners before the polls even open. It would be just as transparent, if not more so.
