Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., whose office seems to view election integrity as an unnecessary barrier to 'participation,' issued a statement that effectively amounted to a lament for the good old days when ballot harvesting and nebulous voting procedures were the norm.

One almost feels a pang of sympathy for the poor Sacramento bureaucrats, constantly forced to contort themselves to justify why California needs every single ballot mailed out to every 'eligible' voter, whether they asked for it or not. The concept of voters actively requesting a ballot, or even – gasp! – showing up in person with an ID, seems to trigger a full-blown existential crisis for the state's election apparatus. It’s almost as if they believe the more ballots they flood the zone with, the more 'democratic' the process becomes, conveniently ignoring the potential for mischief that comes with such an open-door policy.

What the Independent, and certainly Dr. Weber, conveniently miss is the fundamental principle: secure elections foster confidence. But for the California political machine, which thrives on its current, highly flexible voting system, any suggestion of tightening procedures is met with the same level of indignation usually reserved for proposals to cut taxes. It’s almost as if they prefer the current setup, which has consistently delivered the electoral outcomes they desire, no matter how many 'unrequested' ballots end up in recycling bins.

Perhaps Dr. Weber and her allies should spend less time issuing indignant statements and more time considering why so many Americans, especially those who value transparency, are deeply skeptical of California's electoral practices. President Trump’s administration understands that election integrity isn't a partisan issue; it's a bedrock of a functioning republic. But don't expect the local press to connect those dots. They're too busy polishing Sacramento's halo.
