BORED OF SUPERVISORS INVITE YOU TO JUMP THROUGH HOOPS FOR 'PUBLIC COMMENT'

BORED OF SUPERVISORS INVITE YOU TO JUMP THROUGH HOOPS FOR 'PUBLIC COMMENT'Power & Politics
SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.567 · PANEL 5/6 · SB-10E

Your Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, bless their cotton socks, has issued a memo so dense it could be a new building material, outlining exactly how peasants—er, citizens—can attempt to voice opinions that will undoubtedly be ignored. It seems our local mandarins, busy perfecting their Zoom backgrounds and perhaps planning their next five-star retreat, have finally decided that the public should have the 'privilege' of observing their grand pronouncements, provided they navigate a bureaucratic obstacle course worthy of a Soviet-era visa application.

The document, clearly designed by a committee of highly paid consultants who specialize in making things intentionally opaque, lists no fewer than *eight* distinct ways to consume or submit 'feedback.' From obscure cable channels that nobody watches, to YouTube streams that probably get fewer views than a C-SPAN marathon, they’ve thought of everything except making it simple. And let’s not forget the thrilling option of emailing your thoughts to a generic address, where they'll be 'distributed to the Board and posted online' – right next to last year's unread memos about carbon credits and homeless encampments.

But the real gem is the 'Zoom' option. Imagine, trying to comment on the county's latest spending spree or land-use grab, only to be told you need to register, mute your TV, and then wait for the Clerk to 'call you by name' like you're in detention. All for a thrilling three minutes of airtime, subject to the 'discretion of the Chair' – undoubtedly a Chair who's already mentally drafting their next press release about 'robust public engagement.' It's almost as if they want you to just give up and go back to paying taxes quietly.

This isn't 'public participation'; it's a meticulously crafted performance of it. While the Supervisors prattle on about 'equity' and 'access,' they’re building digital moats around their chambers, ensuring that only the most determined, or most easily confused, citizens manage to pierce the veil. Meanwhile, the real decisions are made behind closed doors, influenced by campaign contributions and special interests, a story the Board of Supervisors website would never dream of publishing.
