SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.124 · PANEL 3/6 · SB-7EC

Your Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, those paragons of efficiency and fiscal restraint, once again proved their dedication to the people's urgent matters this week. Amidst looming budget shortfalls, crumbling infrastructure, and a permitting process that could make a saint weep, the Board graciously carved out precious minutes to pass a Resolution of Commendation for one Michael Edwards, celebrating his anointment as a 'Montecito Citizen of the Year.' Because, clearly, the biggest crisis facing our county is a potential shortage of gilded plaques for the already celebrated.

While the rest of us are left to wonder if the county will ever fix that pothole on Main Street or streamline a single building permit, our elected officials are busy patting the backs of folks who likely already have a dedicated room for their accolades. One has to question the return on investment for such an honor. Did this resolution miraculously lower property taxes? Did it prevent another progressive mandate from strangling local businesses? No, but it sure did make for a lovely photo opportunity that will undoubtedly grace a Montecito real estate brochure near you.

It’s always fascinating to see how the Board prioritizes. Forget about actual governance or fiscal responsibility when there are awards to be handed out to those who already have everything. While Mr. Edwards is undoubtedly a fine fellow, one can't help but wonder if this entire exercise isn't just another thinly veiled political maneuver, designed to curry favor within certain affluent zip codes. The real "Citizen of the Year" might be the poor taxpayer footing the bill for these performative charades, praying for a supervisor who remembers their actual job.
