BOOM! COUNTY APPROVES ANOTHER HALF-MILLION FOR BEACH WALKWAY! YOU'RE WELCOME, BLACKBIRD!

It seems our illustrious Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom, has once again graced us with a dazzling display of fiscal restraint. This time, it's for the 'Santa Claus Lane Streetscape and Coastal Access Improvements Project - Phase 2,' which, if you're keeping score at home, has already eaten enough taxpayer cash to pave a small portion of I-5. The latest gift under the tree? A cool $50,295 for Blackbird Architects, Inc. for 'construction support services.' Because apparently, building a beach walkway is rocket science requiring an entire separate contract just to, what, hold the blueprints steady?

And just when you thought it couldn't get any more transparently wasteful, the BoS agenda item conveniently includes a clause allowing the Public Works Director, or their designee (we love a good 'designee,' don't we?), to tack on an extra $5,029 for 'additional work' and extend the contract by a year. It's the government equivalent of ordering a pizza and then signing off on an open tab for 'crust enhancement' and 'delivery coordination' for the next 12 months. One has to wonder if these architects moonlight as financial advisors, because they've certainly mastered the art of maximizing government handouts.

Now, for the really good stuff. This whole charade is supposedly covered by a 'Final Mitigated Negative Declaration' from 2019. That's right, folks, a five-year-old environmental rubber stamp from the pre-Trump-second-term era, trotted out to justify current spending. It’s a classic move: green-light the project once with vague promises, then drip-feed the actual costs for 'support services' and 'amendments' indefinitely. It’s not about the project; it’s about keeping the consultant class employed and the public works machine humming, all on your dime. Remember, when they say 'improvements,' they mean 'improved consultant bank accounts.'

Meanwhile, while they’re throwing tens of thousands at consultants for a sidewalk, our roads are crumbling, our energy prices are skyrocketing thanks to virtue-signaling green mandates, and small businesses are struggling under endless bureaucratic red tape. But hey, at least we'll have a beautifully 'supported' beach access point. Perhaps the Supervisors could use some 'support services' in basic arithmetic and responsible governance.
