It’s 2026, and President Trump is busy making America great again, while here in Santa Barbara County, our esteemed Board of Supervisors is hard at work... *proclaiming* things. This week's vital announcement, solemnly brought forth at the behest of the local AIA chapter, designates October 12-16 as 'AIA Architecture Appreciation Week.' Yes, you read that right. An entire five days dedicated to celebrating... architecture. We can only assume the county's rampant homelessness, skyrocketing cost of living, and perennial water woes have magically vanished, leaving our local politicos with ample time for such earth-shattering pronouncements.

One has to wonder if this resolution passed unanimously, perhaps after a brief but vigorous debate on whether to include 'Spanish Colonial Revival' as a mandatory appreciation theme. While the rest of us are navigating crumbling infrastructure and trying to keep our businesses afloat amidst endless bureaucratic red tape, the Supervisors are busy patting the backs of well-heeled architects. Is there a surprise here? Not really. It’s a classic Santa Barbara move: embrace performative gestures while sidestepping actual governance.

What's the real story here that the mainstream press (and certainly the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors themselves) won't tell you? Follow the money. How many of these 'appreciating' architects are also 'donating' to local campaigns? How many glossy, taxpayer-funded projects have been approved, conveniently designed by the very same 'esteemed' institute being celebrated? This isn't about appreciating beauty; it's about appreciating influence. It’s the quid pro quo of the coastal elite, dressed up as a community celebration. Meanwhile, taxpayers get to appreciate ever-higher taxes for these architectural marvels they can't afford to live in.

Perhaps next year, they’ll declare 'Bureaucratic Resolution Appreciation Week.' Or maybe 'Committee Meeting Recognition Fortnight.' Anything, it seems, to distract from the actual tough decisions and fiscal responsibility our community desperately needs, while ensuring the right people get their moment in the sun – and maybe a new contract or two.
