ADVISORY GROUP 'RECRUITMENT' IS JUST SOCIALISM-LITE 'DIVERSITY' THEATER

The Santa Barbara Independent, in what must be a slow news week, is once again breathlessly promoting the City of Santa Barbara’s annual charade of 'recruiting' for its numerous advisory groups. For those unfamiliar, these are the committees where the city council plants its preferred 'stakeholders' to rubber-stamp pre-determined progressive agendas, all under the guise of 'community input.' It's less about actual advice and more about ensuring the 'right' voices—meaning those aligned with the prevailing woke orthodoxy—get heard, while actual problem-solving takes a backseat to performative activism and identity politics.

Our friends at the Independent seem thrilled by the prospect of citizens 'passionate about making a difference.' What they don't tell you is that 'making a difference' often translates into pushing for more regulations, higher taxes, and endless studies that accomplish nothing but enriching consultants. These groups frequently become echo chambers for the same tired, left-leaning talking points that have already choked the life out of small businesses and driven out common sense from our once-vibrant city. It’s a perfect example of how the administrative state thrives: endless committees, endless meetings, endless 'input' that ultimately serves to justify more government overreach, not less.

The real story, as always, is what’s *not* being said. Who truly benefits from these 'advisory' roles? Often, it’s those with connections to City Hall, eager to push their pet projects or enhance their resumes, while everyday residents who actually pay the bills are left out in the cold. It’s another layer of bureaucracy designed to give the illusion of public participation, rather than genuine accountability. If you want to make a *real* difference, run for office, or better yet, advocate for less government meddling. Otherwise, you’re just a cog in the machine, helping the ruling class consolidate its power and spend your tax dollars on feel-good initiatives that accomplish nothing practical.
