WHO'S RUNNING? MORE LIKE, WHO'S PAYING?

Noozhawk, in a stunning display of journalistic conformity, just alerted us to the thrilling news that several familiar faces are once again gracing the ballot for Santa Barbara's City Council and Mayoral races. We're sure the city is absolutely agog with anticipation to see which progressive pundit or environmental activist will next grace the dais to tell us how to live our lives, spend our money, and, of course, increase our taxes.

But while the 'Hawk is busy counting candidates, The Whipping Post is asking the inconvenient question: who's buttering these political paratroopers' bread? Because in this town, you don't run for office; you're *selected*. The true candidates are rarely discussed; they're the deep-pocketed developers and special interest groups who fund these campaigns, expecting a hefty return on their 'investments' once their chosen puppet is safely ensconced in power. Expect more density, more spending, and fewer parking spots, all while the 'elected' officials pretend it's for 'the greater good.'

It’s always the same tired cycle: a fresh crop of candidates, each promising a slightly different shade of blue bureaucracy, all quietly beholden to the same downtown power brokers who prefer their city pristine for tourists while residents foot the growing bill. Perhaps Noozhawk could try to unearth who’s actually pulling the strings, instead of just cataloging the marionettes on parade. But then again, that might require actual journalism that goes beyond rewriting press releases, and we can’t have that, can we?

So, while we pretend to care about who’s 'running,' know this: the real decisions were made long ago, in hushed conversations far from the public square, orchestrated by those who truly wield power in this city, regardless of who ends up with the ceremonial gavel. And if you think your vote truly matters in that equation, bless your naive little heart.
