The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
WHO CARES ABOUT A STUPID PORPOISE? SB INDY'S LATEST WHALE OF A TALE!
While our local 'Independent' frets over a few aquatic rodents, our city drowns in real problems. Another day, another misplaced priority from the usual suspects.

The Santa Barbara Independent, ever vigilant in its crusade against common sense, has once again graced us with hard-hitting journalism: the plight of the vaquita. Yes, you read that right. With inflation soaring, homelessness exploding, and the local government tripping over its own socialist shoelaces, the Independent dedicates precious ink to a porpoise that, by all accounts, seems determined to shuffle off this mortal coil. It's almost as if they're actively trying to distract us from the monumental failures of their preferred political class.
One can only imagine the breathless urgency in the newsroom as they discovered there were 'less than 10 left.' Was there a full-scale emergency meeting? Did they dispatch a team of 'investigative' reporters to find these elusive sea creatures, perhaps offering them tiny, taxpayer-funded life rafts? Or maybe they just Googled 'most endangered animal' and called it a day, secure in the knowledge that their readership would fawn over their 'compassion' while ignoring the crumbling infrastructure just outside their window.
Meanwhile, the rest of us are left to wonder when the Independent will muster the same fervor for, say, property rights, fiscal responsibility, or holding our elected officials accountable for anything other than their virtue signaling. But no, that would require actual backbone and a willingness to challenge the establishment, not just cuddle up with cuddly (or in this case, barely existing) marine life. It’s a classic move: spotlighting a far-off, unfixable problem to avoid confronting the very real, very local messes they’ve helped create or enable.
So, as the Independent weeps into its oat milk latte over the dwindling numbers of an obscure cetacean, the rest of Santa Barbara continues to navigate the consequences of policies championed by the very voices who find time to mourn a porpoise. Perhaps if the vaquitas learned to vote Democrat or demanded more bike lanes, they'd get some real attention around here.
