The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk

VIEWPOINT DIVERSITY? IN *SANTA BARBARA*?! IS THIS A JOKE, NOOZHAWK?

A local columnist dared to suggest Santa Barbara might benefit from, gasp, differing opinions. We hear the fainting couches are already fully occupied at City Hall.

Noozhawk, bless its earnest little heart, ran a column recently positing that perhaps, just perhaps, Santa Barbara might perk up with a dose of 'viewpoint diversity.' We here at The Whipping Post had to check our calendars to ensure it wasn't April Fool's Day. The very notion suggests that our local betters, the enlightened minds guiding our fair city, aren't already perfect in their collective, harmonious, and utterly singular vision for everything from bike lanes to bird feeders.

The idea that anyone in this town could hold an opinion not pre-approved by the Coastal Commission, the unelected environmental lobby, or at least three progressive non-profits is, frankly, adorable. It's like asking for a diverse menu at a vegan potluck: theoretically possible, but good luck finding it. Our civic leaders have honed the art of consensus to a razor’s edge, primarily by ensuring only one type of opinion ever reaches the public square – and it’s usually emblazoned on a yard sign demanding more taxes or fewer cars.

Now, we appreciate the sentiment. Who doesn't love intellectual variety? But let's be real. In Santa Barbara, 'viewpoint diversity' means choosing between two shades of progressive, or perhaps debating which 'climate-friendly' mandate will bankrupt the most small businesses. The author's quaint suggestion fails to grasp that the "profound conclusion" everyone else here has reached is that dissent is inefficient, untidy, and frankly, quite tacky.

So, while we applaud the spirit of inquiry from Noozhawk's pundit, let's not get carried away. The delicate ecosystem of Santa Barbara's political discourse, much like its rare butterflies, thrives on a monoculture. Any true "diversity" might introduce disruptive thoughts, like fiscal responsibility, property rights, or the radical notion that sometimes, just sometimes, government isn't the answer to every sneeze. Perish the thought!
