Once again, the ivory towers of UC Santa Barbara have blessed us with profound insights, as reported (with a straight face, we're sure) by KEYT NewsChannel 3-12. This time, their crack team of academics has 'discovered' that jobs people associate with women tend to pay less. Stop the presses! We had no idea that elementary school teachers and nurses earned less than oil rig roughnecks and utility linemen. Who knew that physically demanding, dangerous, or highly specialized fields might, just might, command a higher wage? It's almost as if the market dictates pay, not social engineering.

The study, we're told, suggests that 'perceptions' about who does a job influence its pay. Yes, because employers nationwide hold secret cabals to undervalue any profession where a woman might occasionally be seen. It couldn't possibly be that certain fields, regardless of the gender of their practitioners, require different skill sets, responsibilities, or expose workers to varying levels of risk. Or perhaps, and this is a wild thought, women might freely choose professions that offer flexibility, personal fulfillment, or less strenuous work, even if it means lower compensation. Imagine that: individual choice!

This isn't a study; it's a political talking point dressed up in a lab coat, designed to fuel the perennial grievance narrative rather than enlighten. It conveniently sidesteps any honest discussion about career choices, individual aptitude, risk assessment, or actual market forces. We're left to infer that if only we could trick employers into believing more men were kindergarten teachers, their salaries would skyrocket.
