It appears the long national nightmare of California's untouchable Coastal Commission — a body infamous for stifling progress with a pen stroke and a scowl — might finally be over. The Trump administration, through the Commerce Department and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for those whose policy interests extend beyond avocado toast), has launched a full-scale review. This move, reported with barely concealed panic by the UCSB Daily Nexus, aims to bypass the labyrinthine state regulations that have allowed these coastal demigods to essentially halt any development not involving artisanal seaweed farms or more bike paths.

Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, clearly a man unafraid to ruffle some very expensive feathers, has initiated a process that could clip the Commission's wings. For years, this band of unelected ideologues has treated private property rights as suggestions and economic growth as an invasive species. They've been the silent, bureaucratic hand strangling housing, energy projects, and anything that might dare improve the lives of ordinary Californians not living in a Malibu mansion protected by their rulings.

It’s almost as if the federal government finally noticed that California's coastal policies are less about protecting the environment and more about preserving pristine ocean views for the politically connected, while driving up housing costs for everyone else. The environmental lobby, which funds many of these bureaucratic fiefdoms, must be positively apoplectic. Imagine, the audacity of the Trump administration to question the infallible wisdom of those who believe a new parking lot endangers the entire Pacific ecosystem!

This investigation promises to be a breath of fresh, un-regulated air. While the usual suspects at the Campus Compost, er, Daily Nexus, will undoubtedly frame this as an assault on democracy (because bureaucratic overreach is apparently synonymous with democracy now), sensible Californians will see it for what it is: a much-needed intervention. Perhaps now we can get some common sense back on the coast, or at least a new gas station without a five-year environmental impact report studying the mating habits of obscure beach fleas. The untold story here, of course, is which development projects, stalled for years, might now suddenly find renewed life – and which well-heeled donors to progressive causes are suddenly sweating.
