Apparently, our public schools have decided that algebra and civics are far too pedestrian. Why teach actual knowledge when you can indoctrinate impressionable youth into becoming junior gumshoes for the latest progressive cause celebre?

One has to wonder what invaluable lessons these 'teen interns' are missing while they're busy attending sessions with 'local detectives and prosecutors' to discuss 'exploitation, prevention, and awareness.' Perhaps they're learning the vital skill of identifying potential 'trafficking victims' based on, well, whatever nebulous criteria the state-approved curriculum has concocted this week. Meanwhile, the school district's graduation rates and test scores quietly continue their freefall.

It’s almost as if the powers-that-be in Santa Barbara have realized their grip on the older generations is slipping, so they’re starting younger. Get them while they’re still pliable, fill their heads with vague dangers and even vaguer solutions, and presto – you’ve got a whole new cohort ready to march to whatever drumbeat the progressive establishment plays next. Don't be surprised when these 'empowered' teens start reporting their parents for 'microaggressions' next.

The real angle here, conveniently omitted by our friends at KEYT, is how much taxpayer money is being diverted from actual education to fund these feel-good, virtue-signaling programs. While parents struggle with crumbling school facilities and underpaid teachers, the district finds ample budget for 'internships' that teach kids to look for problems that, while tragic, are statistically far less common than, say, functional literacy. But hey, at least they can put 'human trafficking prevention specialist' on their college applications!
