The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
SUPERVISORS SIP ON LAWSUIT SORROW: WINERY SUES OVER BUREAUCRATIC VINO
The Board of Supervisors, caught in the sticky legal residue of their own regulatory overreach, is once again heading behind closed doors to discuss why local businesses keep suing them. Surprise!
8/20/2026 · Inspired by “CONFERENCE WITH LEGAL COUNSEL-EXISTING LITIGATION (Paragraph (1) of subdivision (d) of Government Code section 54956.9) Flying Goat Cellars, Inc., et al. v. Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, et al., U.S. District Court, Central District of California, Case Number 2:26cv05489.” via SB County Board of Supervisors
Power & PoliticsIt seems our esteemed Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors can’t quite grasp the concept of leaving productive businesses alone, as evidenced by yet another agenda item buried deep in their August 25th meeting for a 'conference with legal counsel.' This time, it's Flying Goat Cellars, Inc., and an unspecified 'et al.' — likely a whole herd of other folks fed up with the county’s penchant for punitive permits and endless red tape. One wonders if they even bother to clear the empty pizza boxes from the last litigation pow-wow before rolling out the next one.
While the Supervisors on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors would have us believe this is just another routine matter, the discerning taxpayer knows better. This isn't about protecting the public; it’s about protecting the jobs of county bureaucrats who seem to get a thrill out of stifling local enterprise. Every lawsuit is a direct result of policies designed to make it harder, not easier, for a business to operate, creating an entire industry of compliance consultants and lawyers to navigate the labyrinthine regulations. Meanwhile, our county coffers hemorrhage money defending the very 'progress' that chokes the life out of our economy.
Remember, folks, these 'existing litigation' items are rarely about some rogue citizen doing something truly awful. More often, they're about hardworking entrepreneurs simply trying to make a living and being told 'no' by a government that prefers abstract ideals over actual prosperity. While President Trump’s administration is busy slashing federal red tape to unleash American ingenuity, our local progressive overlords are tying up our wine country in knots. One can only imagine the smug grins on the faces of the county attorneys as they bill by the hour to defend yet another indefensible overreach.
The real story here isn’t just the lawsuit; it’s the systemic harassment of small businesses by an ever-expanding county government that believes it knows best. When will the Board realize that the cost of these legal skirmishes, paid for with your tax dollars, far outweighs any perceived benefit of their meddling? Perhaps when they’re sued into insolvency, they’ll finally get the message.
