The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
SUPERVISORS IN SHOCK: LAW ENFORCEMENT MAY GET... BENEFITS?!
Your 'caring' county overlords begrudgingly approve meager raises for deputies, but only after ensuring no trees were harmed in the making of this fiscal decision.
Power & PoliticsIt seems the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom and boundless compassion for the taxpayer's wallet, has once again been forced to confront the harsh reality of — gasp! — paying those who actually protect our communities. In a recent agenda item, the Board reluctantly acknowledged the need to approve a successor Memorandum of Understanding for the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, covering the crucial period of August 17, 2026, through July 2, 2028.
One can only imagine the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching that preceded this momentous decision to offer the brave men and women of our Sheriff's Department the bare minimum. After all, why adequately compensate law enforcement when there are so many other pressing concerns, like ensuring we don't accidentally disturb a gopher during a new bike path construction, or funding another 'equity' consultant to tell us what we already know?
The real genius, however, is the Environmental Quality Act determination. Our Supervisors, ever vigilant against the existential threat of a paper cut, boldly declared that the mere act of paying deputies does not constitute a 'project' with 'potentially significant physical impact on the environment.' Phew! For a moment there, I was worried that higher wages for deputies might lead to an increase in carbon emissions from their fully-fueled patrol cars, or perhaps disrupt the delicate ecosystem of bureaucracy within County Hall. The priorities of our local leadership are truly something to behold, confirming that taxpayer dollars are far more expendable than a single endangered blade of grass.
This whole charade, which the SB County Board of Supervisors put on, simply reinforces that our County’s leadership only acts on behalf of public safety when absolutely cornered. While they endlessly tout their progressive values, their actions consistently reveal a baffling detachment from the fundamental duty of securing a safe community. It’s almost as if the only thing they approve enthusiastically is another study to determine why the last study failed.
