One has to wonder how many new clipboards and diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops this will fund, while actual public safety concerns remain firmly on the back burner.

The agenda item from your perpetually well-intentioned (but perpetually ineffective) Board of Supervisors detailed the usual bureaucratic ballet: authorizing the Sheriff and Probation Chief to accept the loot, followed by a budget revision to shuffle funds between departments like a shell game at a carnival. Six hundred fifty thousand dollars here for 'services and supplies,' thirty-one thousand there for 'indirect costs' – which, if history is any guide, means consultants, consultants, and more consultants. It's a classic maneuver: get state money, then immediately invent new ways to spend it that inevitably involve more government employees and less tangible benefit for actual taxpayers.

But the real gem? The swift determination that none of this constitutes a 'Project' under the California Environmental Quality Act. Of course not! Spending millions of dollars on abstract 'funding mechanisms' and 'fiscal activities' couldn't possibly have a 'physical impact on the environment.' It's not like the paper used to print all those new forms or the carbon footprint of all those new county vehicles needs to be considered. It's almost as if the only thing being transformed here is our collective wallet, emptied for the sake of feel-good initiatives that expand government power while delivering negligible improvements to the lives of hardworking Santa Barbarans. Another day, another dollar, another grant for the grand illusion of progress.
