The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors

SUPERVISORS DUNK TAXPAYERS FOR CRUMMY IPAD SOFTWARE!

Your 'elected' officials just green-lit another half-baked tech boondoggle, spending almost a quarter-million on software nobody understands, all while dodging pesky environmental reviews.

Well, lookie here! The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, always on the cutting edge of bureaucracy, plans to flush another $223,700 of your hard-earned cash down the digital drain. This week's agenda item, cunningly disguised as a "First Amendment to the Software Support and Maintenance agreement," is really just more money for Central Square Technologies' 'Computer Aided Dispatch' system. We're pretty sure 'CAD' is bureaucrat-speak for 'that buggy program running on a 10-year-old iPad in the corner.

Yes, for the low, low price of a nice house, the Board is extending a software contract for a year. A full year! Think of all the cutting-edge flip phones we could buy for the Sheriff's department, or maybe, just maybe, provide actual support for local businesses instead of lining the pockets of some faraway tech firm. But no, the beat goes on, as does their apparent aversion to robust, transparent procurement.

And in a classic Santa Barbara move, they've declared this digital cash bonfire "not a 'Project' subject to California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review." Of course it's not! Because updating a software license, naturally, won't cause any direct or indirect physical changes to the environment. It's just a subtle shift in your wallet's ecosystem. One has to wonder if these tireless 'public servants' even read the documents before rubber-stamping these expenditures, or if they just saw "software" and thought, "Looks expensive, must be important!" It’s almost as if the primary goal is avoiding accountability while expanding the digital footprint of their administrative empire—and not, say, delivering efficient public service.
