The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
SUPERVISORS 'DISCOVER' COW POOP STILL GREENLIGHTED BY CEQA!
Your esteemed Board of Supervisors just proved once again their keen ability to state the obvious, spending taxpayer time on whether a report about cows needs an environmental impact statement.
Well, folks, it seems the intellectual titans on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors have, after much deliberation, rendered a Solomon-like verdict on the existential threat of our local agriculture. That's right, they reviewed the 2025 Crop and Livestock Report and heroically declared, with the full weight of bureaucracy, that acknowledging the existence of a cow is, in fact, "not a project that is subject to environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)." Who knew? We're all grateful they managed to untangle that Gordian knot in a brisk 15 minutes, surely saving us from an endless spiral of reports about reports.
One almost wonders if they needed a consultant to confirm that receiving a document about carrots and cattle doesn't equate to bulldozing a pristine wetland. The County Executive Officer's recommendation was, predictably, to "APPROVE" this earth-shattering insight. We can only imagine the brainstorming sessions that led to this agenda item, likely fueled by lukewarm coffee and an insatiable desire to justify six-figure salaries by applying CEQA to the act of reading.
While the Supervisors patted themselves on the back for this administrative feat, one has to ask: what crucial county business is being ignored while our elected officials debate whether acknowledging pig farming requires a full environmental impact study? Perhaps the next agenda item will be a deep dive into whether breathing within county limits constitutes a "direct or indirect physical change in the environment." Hopefully, they'll spare us the 15 minutes and just receive and file that, too. Meanwhile, the actual cost of living keeps rising, and our roads crumble, but at least we know the paperwork about a cow is CEQA-compliant.
