The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
SUPERVISORS' BUDGET HEARING: MORE TAXES TO FUND WHATEVER MAKES 'EM FEEL GOOD
Your betters on the Board of Supervisors have graciously scheduled a public hearing on their latest fiscal fantasy, ensuring your tax dollars will continue to fuel their pet projects and preferred nar

It seems the Santa Barbara Independent, in a fit of linguistic diversity, decided to tell us about the County Supervisors' budget hearing for fiscal year 2026-27 – all $1.66 billion of it – in a language most of their readers likely don't speak, bless their bleeding hearts. While they were busy flexing their multicultural bona fides, we at The Whipping Post noticed something truly universal: no matter the language, big government in Santa Barbara County still means big spending on increasingly baffling priorities.
This isn't just about shuffling numbers; it's about cementing the county's reputation as a progressive paradise, one bloated line item at a time. Expect the usual suspects to get their pound of flesh – more 'equity' programs, consultants for 'climate resilience' (because the weather here is just so unpredictable, unlike the county's spending habits!), and no doubt a healthy bump for whatever feel-good initiative makes the loudest activists happy this quarter. Meanwhile, essential services like roads and actual public safety will likely be told to 'do more with less,' as always.
What the Independent won't tell you, because it’s not in the progressive playbook, is how many of these budget increases ultimately flow back into the coffers of politically connected donors and 'preferred' contractors. Every dollar spent on a new 'homeless outreach' coordinator or an ecological impact study is a dollar that could have funded a local business, repaired a pothole, or, God forbid, remained in taxpayers' pockets. But hey, at least our Supervisors can pat themselves on the back for another year of 'responsible' stewardship, all while the county debt quietly soars like one of their endangered condors.
So, prepare yourselves. The June 16th hearing isn't an invitation to influence; it's a notification that your wallet is about to get a little lighter, all in the name of progress – or at least, whatever passes for it this week in Santa Barbara's halls of power. President Trump's White House might be cutting wasteful spending, but here in Santa Barbara, it's business as usual: spend first, ask questions never, and blame 'systemic inequities' for everything.
