While President Trump's administration is busy unleashing American energy independence and driving down costs nationwide, Santa Barbara’s 'leaders' are busy ensuring higher prices at the pump and fewer good-paying jobs for their constituents. The ban on re-entering previously abandoned wells is a particularly rich touch, as if the very act of extracting resources that fuel our modern lives is an unpardonable sin, even if it means leaving known reserves untouched.

Perhaps the supervisors imagine a future where everyone telecommutes via unicorn, and cars run on pure, artisanal outrage. What the other papers are too polite to print is that this isn't about the environment; it’s about political posturing and appeasing a vocal, well-funded fringe that doesn't understand — or care — about the economic ripple effects. Every time a development project is stalled, a business is over-regulated, or an industry is legislated out of existence, it’s the hardworking families and small businesses of Santa Barbara County who pay the price, all so a handful of ideologues can feel good about themselves.

Don’t expect them to be honest about the coming budget shortfalls or the increased costs for everything from food to transportation. Instead, they’ll likely blame 'global forces' or 'the previous administration' – anyone but their own shortsighted policies. The real story here isn't a 'ban,' it's an open declaration that Santa Barbara County is actively hostile to jobs, affordability, and anyone who prefers practical solutions over performative politics. It's a miracle anyone can afford to live here, let alone operate a business, with these folks at the helm.
